Distinguish balance, settlement and release

A statement showing an outstanding balance, a receipt showing money was paid and confirmation that a lender’s interest or registration restriction was released answer different questions. Ask for the evidence required by the official transfer process, not only a screenshot supplied by the seller.

Record the issuing institution, reference, vehicle identity, borrower or customer details, date and verification method. If the vehicle is being imported or exported, confirm whether another jurisdiction’s secured interest also needs attention.

Sequence the transaction safely

The sale agreement should explain how finance will be settled, when the release will be confirmed, when ownership transfer occurs and when the remaining funds are released. Avoid an informal sequence where the buyer pays first and hopes the paperwork follows.

  • Identify the lender or secured party
  • Confirm the exact settlement process through an authoritative channel
  • Match the release evidence to the VIN and relevant party
  • Verify any registration restriction has been addressed
  • Tie final payment to the agreed transfer milestone

Document uncertainty honestly

AutoProof cannot determine whether a hidden lien exists. If no authoritative source is available, the correct status is ‘not verified’, not ‘clear’. That distinction matters when the transaction is reviewed later.
