Transcribe the VIN from the vehicle rather than copying it from the advertisement. Compare it character by character with registration, export, customs, invoice, inspection, service and history records. Photographs should be sharp enough to preserve the full surrounding plate or stamping area.
Do not silently correct a suspected typo. Mark the exact position, ask the issuer or seller for a corrected authoritative record and preserve both versions. A single-character difference can point to a different vehicle.

Inspect the context around the identifier
A correct-looking number is not enough if the physical identifier appears replaced, re-fixed, obscured or inconsistent with the surrounding finish. Ask an independent inspector familiar with the marque and model to examine factory identifier locations and signs of repair.

Separate decoding from status checking
A VIN decoder may describe manufacturer, model or specification. A history provider may search records available to that provider. A government or law-enforcement query may cover a different status and jurisdiction. Record the purpose and coverage of every result so one check is not mistaken for another.
INTERPOL explains that its stolen-motor-vehicle database is used by police in member countries. A consumer website claiming to perform an INTERPOL check should therefore be examined carefully for its actual access, source and terms.
Escalate conflicts instead of averaging them away
If two authoritative records disagree, the answer is not to choose the one that supports the sale. Obtain issuer confirmation, corrected records or professional assistance. Do not pay a non-refundable amount while the vehicle identity remains unresolved.
