Watch the identity of the vehicle

A VIN that differs between the physical car and one document is a material conflict, not an acceptable typo. The same applies when a VIN plate looks re-fixed, a stamping area has unexplained repairs, factory labels are missing or the decoded specification does not fit the vehicle presented.

INTERPOL’s published operations describe stolen vehicles with VINs removed and cases where manufacturer assistance was needed to identify origin. A polished replacement plate or plausible decoder result therefore cannot substitute for a competent physical identity inspection.

• VIN differs across the car, title, registration, export or customs record
• Identifier plate, rivets, adhesive or surrounding finish appears disturbed
• Model, engine, trim or manufacture details conflict with authoritative decoding
• Seller prevents an independent inspection of factory identifier locations

Watch the authority and payment trail

A legitimate intermediary should be able to explain whether it owns the car, holds it on consignment or acts for the owner. Treat an unrelated payment account, refusal to identify the owner, recently created paperwork or a sale outside the normal transfer process as unresolved risks.

Urgency is especially dangerous when paired with a non-refundable deposit. Do not let a below-market price or claim of another buyer compress the time needed for issuer, registry, finance and origin-country checks.

• Seller is not the registered owner and supplies no verifiable authority
• Invoice issuer, payment recipient and transfer party are different without explanation
• Only cropped screenshots or low-resolution document images are supplied
• Seller refuses source verification or insists the result must remain informal
• Price and deadline are used to discourage independent checks

Respond without making an accusation

A red flag is a reason to pause, not proof that a person committed a crime. Preserve the records, stop payment and seek the appropriate authority or qualified adviser. Do not confront a suspected trafficker or attempt to retain the vehicle yourself.

Record the exact source and date of every search. A clean result from a consumer database is evidence of that limited search only; it is not a universal theft-status certificate.
